WHAT IS HUTT ART?
The Hutt Art Society is a group of artists and craft people who share studio facilities in Lower Hutt. The Society’s rooms are located in two gracious old houses at the corner of Myrtle and Huia Streets, Lower Hutt (just next door to the Huia Swimming Pool). There is a large painting studio, pottery rooms including several kilns and wheels, a porcelain-painting room and kiln, a printing room, a weaving room with several large looms and a large workroom for spinning and embroidery groups. We also have a kitchen for a cuppa to refresh workers, and plenty of parking.
GALLERY
Linking the two houses is the Odlin Gallery. This is used for HAS exhibitions as well as being let out to other artists and art groups for exhibitions. It is well used throughout the year.
TUITION
There are classes run by experienced tutors on a regular basis in painting, pottery, and porcelain-painting. Workshops are run periodically using a visiting tutor in a number of crafts and styles.
If you are a beginner, other artists will always be willing to help, give advice and get you started. For more experienced artists working together in a group can offer companionship, helpful criticism and new ideas.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership of Hutt Art entitles you to join a class or work on your own in one of the studios whenever it is not in use. It also entitles you to exhibit in the Hutt Art exhibitions. You will receive regular newsletters advertising events and informing you of what other members have been doing. A number of local art and craft supply shops offer discounts to members.
JOINING
There is room for new members in almost all the groups and classes. You may “try out” a class to see if it is what you want to do for three weeks before we ask you to join. There is an annual subscription for membership to the Hutt Art.
